After Sam finished his copying, he went cautiously over to the giant stove and lit it. The fire took hold instantly, and soon the stove was good and hot and flapjacks were sizzling on the griddle. Dinner was a merry meal, with hot pancakes and bacon and biscuits dripping with butter.

As he filled his plate, Johnny Inkslinger said to Paul Bunyan, “What did you say to that witch to get her to lift the curse on Sourdough Sam?”

Paul Bunyan chuckled. “I just told her about a man I met while I was out hunting for new timberland,” he said. “His name is Herman the Hermit. He lives on the other side of Ironwood, and he is hankering for a wife. The witch-woman couldn’t pack her bags fast enough!”

“Don’t seem fair to poor Herman, sending him a witch woman who can’t cook to be his wife,” said Johnny.

“Not at all,” said Paul Bunyan with a big grin. “Herman don’t care who he marries as long as she can keep house. And he doesn’t have any teeth, so the only thing he can eat is possum stew!”

The lumberjacks all laughed and then got down to some serious eating. As for Sourdough Sam, he vowed then and there to stick to cooking and leave the courting up to the younger men. And that’s just what he did.
